The Trials of Isabella Mary Kelly
A Pioneering Woman's Struggle for Justice
by Maurie
Garland New: Revised and Updated Edition 2012
|
Isabella Mary Kelly (no relation to Ned) was born in Dublin, and arrived in Australia in 1835, a wealthy woman, single and unattached. She became the third settler in the Manning Valley, a pioneer in her own right. Isabella ran the property herself, and had eight convicts assigned to work for her.
Disliked and taken for granted by the male counterparts who lived near her, Isabella soon fell victim to gossip, malice, forgery and perjury, and was sentenced to twelve months in Darlinghurst Gaol for a crime she did not commit.
This is the story of how Isabella Mary Kelly was convicted, and her struggle to prove her innocence and obtain justice.
Much that is untrue about Isabella Mary Kelly has been published in various newspapers, magazines and books throughout the 20th Century. Maurie Garland, the author of 'Jimmy Governor: Blood on the Tracks' and 'Horace Dean: A Pocketful of Lies' is the first to dig deeply into the archives and, for the first time, reveal the true story of this woman of such great pioneering spirit.

Of Greater Worth than Gold
The History and Legacy of Isabella Murray
by
Ross Murray
|
Like thousands of other Scots, John and Isabella Murray were victims of the vast industrial and agricultural changes that transformed British society during the Economic Revolution. As tenant farmers, they lost their small holding as farms on the large estates were amalgamated and as sheep production replaced the more traditional intensive cropping. When John died in 1845, Isabella was left with ten children in a situation of great uncertainty.
This book traces the story of the families of John and Isabella, as far as available records allow, for the two centuries prior to these events. It considers the issues involved in the decision of Isabella and the children to migrate to Australia, describes the voyages themselves in 1848 and 1851, and records the settlement of the family in the fertile and picturesque Manning Valley on the Mid North Coast of NSW, whose rolling green hills and rich farmlands are reminiscent of the Borders valleys of the Rulewater and Jedwater that the family had known so well.
The book also examines something of the character of these early generations of Murrays, in particular the profound Christian convictions which motivated their thoughts and actions and which have left a long-lasting legacy of Christian commitment and service in many branches of the family.
It is the story of the pioneering origins of a prolific family that has made a significant contribution to the Manning District and indeed to the nation. It is a story worth telling.

Horace Dean: A Pocketful of Lies
by
Maurie Garland
|
George Fife Angas arrived in
Adelaide in 1851, feted as the father and founder of
South Australia. Extremely wealthy and
religious, he settled near Angaston in the Barossa
Valley, the town named after him.
The American-born Horace Dean
had arrived in this Colony in 1849. A Doctor
and Magistrate of high repute, he became the first
Mayor of Angaston. But was he who he said he
was?
The popular and
charismatic Horace Dean later moved on to New South
Wales, where he published and edited a newspaper;
became a Member of Parliament; and was elected Mayor
of Grafton. And controversy followed him
everywhere.

Postcards from the
Front:
Still Going Strong
by Margaret A Clark
|
This book is based
on over 200 postcards sent by Alfred Haynes during
the years 1916-1919 to his wife and
children. Author Margaret
Clark has also used letters written by other soldiers
from the Manning Valley to provide additional
detail.
Alf's
cards, in particular reflect the anguish experienced
by a soldier who has left wife and family behind to
proceed to a war that was consuming men at a fearsome
rate.
The
various battles that Alf participated in are
described in detail and specifically address the role
of the 36th Battalion. These engagements
include Messines Ridge, Passchendaele, Villers
Bretonneux and Amiens.

Jimmy Governor: Blood on the
Tracks
by
Maurie Garland
|
Defined as
a half-caste, Jimmy Governor challenged the white
man’s Aboriginal stereotype in 1900 – he was highly
intelligent, better educated than many of his white
contemporaries, personable, a hard worker, did not
drink alcohol, and was married to a white
woman.
So how did
Jimmy become a mass murderer?
Using
meticulous research, Maurie Garland sheds new light
on the Governor and Mawbey families to provide a new
analysis of the events that gripped Australia in
1900.
Tom
Keneally’s fictional book, The Chant of Jimmie Blacksmith
, and the movie of the same title,
was based on the life of Jimmy Governor.

The Swiss Swagman
Theodor Müller's
Nineteen Years in
Australia
Translated by Frank Pammer
Edited by Maurie Garland & John Ramsland
|
Even before the jolly swagman went
Walzing Matilda, Theodor Müller left his home in Switzerland and
spent nineteen years travelling the Australian
Outback, mainly on foot.
Arriving in Sydney in 1857,
Müller roamed north to
Brisbane, west to Mudgee and south to Gundagai,
sleeping beneath the stars and finding work where he
could. In observing the culture of this new
country, Müller also wrote
chapters on gold, squatters, bushrangers &
Aborigines.
To supplement the text, the editors
have illustrated the book with many nineteenth
century drawings, and provided annotations,
background boxes and commentary boxes.

The Trials of Isabella Mary Kelly
Her Legend and the Truth
by Maurie
Garland
|
In a remote nineteenth century
Australian district, Isabella Mary Kelly chose a
career as a businesswoman over married life.
Society disapproved. The justice system

distrusted, she fell victim to gossip, malice,
forgery and perjury, and was jailed for a crime she
did not commit. And the media got it wrong for a
century and a half.
AT LAST ... the truth about the
remarkable life of ISABELLA KELLY ... a pioneer
of rare quality who deserves recognition.

No Lilies in This Valley
Stories of Rural Women in the Manning Valley 1850 - 1950
Compiled by Lucy Weller and Ruth Woodward
|
This book is dedicated to the many women who have made their home in the Manning Valley.
Di Morrissey's Foreward noted:
"As a modern women of the Manning, I found this book a wonderful read, and resource, because it gives voice to women who have quietly contributed so much to our society and culture in the Manning region.
Their perspectives reflected through reminiscences and research show clearly that devotion to the values of hard work, truth, frugality, family, friends and community, greatly enriched the heritage of future generations.
It is a fitting tribute to the battlers of bush and town back in those very simple yet difficult days when life was so different from our contemporary era of hi-tech and equally heartless globalisation.
Their stories are inspiring, and a valuable contribution to the recorded history of the region, and our nation."

Wherrol Flat - Caparra
Memories of a Bygone Era
By Tom Woollard
|
In the Foreword to this book, Eric Richardson OAM wrote:
"When Tom Woollard wrote 'Changes of a Lifetime', those who read the book commented on his ability to recall and describe events that had taken place in his childhood and early adult life. Many readers were enthralled at his descriptions of family and school life, of his humour and his stories, which sometimes were tinged with pathos. They were also entertained by some of his observations of the foibles of his fellow man.
In this book Tom has focussed on the years he and Jean spent at Caparra. Again, he has drawn on his observations of life around him to paint a picture of a community, which, notwithstanding social, cultural and religious differences, worked together to improve the district for the good of everyone. Whether it was helping a 'new Australian' family build a dairy and bails or erecting poles to bring electricity to the area or driving sick neighbours to a doctor, Tom has shown us the bonds which develop between people striving together for a better life.
I...commend the book to all those people who like to read about life unvarnished. It is a good read."

"I hope this book will help
enlighten the wider community about our culture and
lifestyle and to know that, like other ethnic and
indigenous races, we are different and ask everyone
to respect our culture. Not because it is the
oldest culture in the world and sacred to the
Aboriginal people, but because our people have
suffered so much trying to retain against all odds,
what culture we have left."
