We have received an Email from Gilbert van der Jagt who tells us he is a historian currently researching a biography of Alex Mair, who was Premier of NSW when the bridge was opened.  He aims to publish a book in 2004.

He says that Alex Mair was a clean-shaven, solidly built gentleman, who had gone bald in his mid-twenties.  He is quite sure Alex Mair is making the speech.
